Tuesday 22nd March – Relax, travel & hike **** sunny – Lac Vallon
Woke to yet another sunny still day, will this lovely weather ever end?
hope not :) Not skiing here at Praz today after yesterday’s epic 50-mile
day! So had relaxing start before packing up the van and heading down. The
resort was very quiet yet again apart from the cross country pistes lower
down where loads of kids were having fun on the learner track – school
was never that good for me!!!
The lower we got the more cloud there was and the sun completely
disappeared! On the out skirts of Taninges we really did have a near death
incident when some French tosser decided to overtake a line of slow traffic
uphill and we nearly had a head on!!! At least I found out the hooter
works, the French are such impatient drivers:( With our heart rate nearly
back to normal we found a small supermarket to stock up on goodies
including a lovely big box of vibrant red Spanish strawberries in a wooden
box and four chocolate eggs in an egg box with a small spoon to eat the
soft nutty centre, well it is nearly Easter:)
Just past the Sommand turn off we found a small road which lead to
Megevette along a beautiful alpine valley, past lacs and grazing cows with
buzzards in the trees, even if it was a bit smelly as all the farmers had
spread cow manure on their fields! It was then only a short way to the dead
end road that leads to another one of our favourites Le Chevrerie:)
We had a quick look at the ski runs at the end as we will ski tomorrow if
the weather is good before returning to one of the best spots in France our
parking spot by Lac Vallon overlooking the fairy tale chapelle St. Bruno:)
We spent a relaxing couple of hours having lunch, watching a fine display
by mistle thrushes and chaffinches rummaging in the grass, reading and
watching the walkers stroll by before donning our walking boots and going
for a stroll. Even though the sun was out the wind had picked up so we
wrapped up and set off toward the chapelle crossing the mountain stream
over a couple of footbridges. We had a look inside which was nice apart
from a carving of the Virgin Mary which looked like it was done by a
five-year-old – a bit scary! It was then along the far side of the mostly
frozen Lac in the shade but we were sheltered from the wind and got too hot
and in the end the coats had to come off! At the far end of the Lac you
crossed a bridge where the stream continued down the valley and the
followed a path right by the water’s edge. One disappointing thing, when
we were here last time you could make the frozen Lac ‘sing’ by throwing
stones on the ice but sadly this time it didn’t work:( The path then
followed back to the van where we had a cuppa, bread and jam, read until
the sun disappeared before driving back up to the ski lift car park for a
good start tomorrow. We had left over lasagne while listening to the
mountain stream watching the piste bashers start their night’s work!
